| Tank Abandonment
First, and ideally, we strongly recommend you have your underground tank removed. It is becoming more difficult to get insurance, a mortgage or to sell your home or business with a tank underground. If you cannot remove the tank because it is under a porch or foundation, we suggest abandoning the tank in its place. Here are the steps we take for tank abandonment:
- Use a dipstick coated with a special paste to show how much water lies below the oil in the tank. Most tanks have at least some condensation.
- Dig up the tank (the top of which may be 4 feet below the surface) and remove the top portion of tank.
- Pump the oil into a container truck.
- Triple rinse the tank or hand wipe the tank clean.
- Pipes are cut off and capped or removed below grade.
- Fill in the tank with certified clean fill or sand.
- We will complete any decommissioning paperwork required by the township inspector.
At this point, you have done what is required of you.
Quick Environmental now takes any water, sludge or oil to an environmental remediation outfit for treatment. The project cost varies, depending on how easy it is to get to the tank. |
